Door Step School’s (DSS) primary goal is to mainstream underprivileged children into formal education and in this effort, children from the age group of 6 years and above are enrolled in Government schools through all our initiatives. However, merely enrolling them in schools is not enough. Providing school transport facility is a vital need to ensure that the children continue in school and are also regular. Most of the times schools may not be within walking distance. Sometimes the schools are at walking distance but across a highway, making it difficult for children as young as of 6 years to walk to school safely, without a transport facility. Parents of these children are unable to spare time to take the children to school. The elder children are at home to take care of their younger siblings. Sending children to school is not a priority for these parents. Hence DSS transport facility plays an important role to take our beneficiaries to school. Safety and security of the children is of prime importance for Door Step School. Hence, we also assign a female escort to each vehicle. The escort gathers children from each site and helps them bring on board to the vehicle. The vehicle drops the children to school and picks them up from school. Our coordinators prepare the daily schedule of the vehicle from various sites to different schools and back. Supervisors monitor the implementation of daily plan and maintain records of children using transportation. The transport cost per child per month come to Rs 420/- and we provide transport to around 600 children every month.
